HDR foto

2010-05-16

iPhone OS version 3.1.2

2009-10-21

This OS update was released to fix some of the many bugs in the 3.1 version of the OS including:

  • Not waking from sleep
  • Occasional crash during video stream
  • Interrupt cellular network services.

This last one was of my favourites. Also I discovered that it did not change my ringtones.

All in all a good update, but one that would not be necessary if proper testing procedures were in place before realising.

Visiting Fighterwing Skrydstrup

2009-10-03

As a part of my sub officer-training at the DEMA Emergency Services College in Tinglev, I visited Fighterwing Skrydstrup, with my class. The trip was arranged for us to take a closer look at the SAR helicopter and the Fire & Rescue services at the air base.

Upgrading my iPhone to ver. 3.1

2009-09-22

Apple introduced the 3.1 upgrade recently, and of course I had to try it.

The 3.1 version included amongst others:
* Genius Recommendations for Apps
* Genius Mixes
* Download Ringtones Wirelessly
* Organize Apps in iTunes
* Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
* iTunes U content organization
* Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
* Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
* Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
* Option to “Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
* Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
* Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
* Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
* Paste phone numbers into the keypad
* Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
* Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
* Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
* Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

But it also included the usual problems. After updating I have to reconstruct the settings for my cellular data network and also the MMS settings. Another problem I discovered was that it changes all ringtones to the default ringtone.

There has been rumours that the upgrade mess’ up the battery of your iPhone, whether or not these problems are true, I for one have not had this problem.

Canon EOS 500D

2009-09-03

I stumbled upon this in-depth review of my new camera at dpreview.com

Conclusion:

The EOS 500D is the latest incarnation of a highly successful line of cameras and although the ‘entry level’ market segment is these days much more crowded than it used to be, we would be very surprised if the new model would not sell like hotcakes.

All the major manufacturers cram more and more new features into their ‘budget’ offerings but the EOS 500D is arguably the currently best specced camera in the segment, which lifts it some distance above pure ‘entry level’ territory. It comes with the highest resolution sensor (15.1 effective megapixels) in its class, an excellent 3.0 inch high resolution screen, extended sensitivity up to ISO 12800 and the arguably for many users most attractive new feature, a movie mode that records 1080P/20fps or 720P/30fps High Definition video footage.

It combines all this with decent image quality and while its appearance might be a little plasticy and the handling can be difficult with larger hands the 500D’s main problem could be that it’s a little pricier than most of its direct competitors which, in these times of economic turmoil, might render it less attractive to some potential buyers.

New Camera

2009-09-02

Today I finally convinced myself, that getting a new camera would be a wise investment. I spend the last couple weeks scanning the market for digital SLR’s. I have been looking at both Nikon, Sony and Canon, and the choice fell on the 6 month old newcomer from Canon: the EOS 500D.

Today I went to the store www.bingofoto.dk to pick-up the new toy. Of course I couldn’t just get a camera (although the box included almost everything you need to create your own pieces of art). Firstly I needed storage. The 500D has the ability to record HD video, so 512 MB wouldn’t suffice. I needed at least 16 GB which i purchased in the form of 2 x 8 GB SDHC from SanDisk’ Extreme III 30 MB/s edition.

The camera comes with a 18-55 mm IS kit which is good for up close. For longer range I ordered the Tamron 70-300 mm lens, and for both lenses UV-filters (from Hoya) and lens hoods. Metz (not the German fire-engine company) builds flash’ for Canon cameras (amongst others), so I decided to get the Metz 48 AF-1 which is at least as good as the Canon 430EX II. Finally I needed a bag to hold everything, and bought the Lowepro Nova 180AW in black.

At the time of writing the battery is in the charger, and hopefully it is ready when I come home from teaching a first-aid class in Kolding tonight.
